September 14, 2013
On Thursday September 12th, 2013. The UHNA leadership comprising Uche Unogu and Quin Starks, accompanied by Matt Jones and Jim Pennell, met with the planning committee of Uindy Homecoming 2013. Alumni members were present as well as our state representative, Justin Moed. The meeting was productive in that discussions swirled around the Universities priority to be an anchor to the community. This will be played out by service to the community in terms of clean ups, volunteering and other initiatives.
Uche asked Uindy to consider its scope of service to the community and to be clear in communicating this. Is it a one time event, or a long term project? Uche also rallied around a wonderful idea by Quinn to provide neighbors with gear that made them feel like a part of the neighborhood. Homecomings have somewhat been antagonistic to the neighbors in the past, in that guests park on the neighbors grass, the crowd is much and the noise is deafening. By reaching out to the neighbors and involving them, Uindy hopes to make homecoming an event for the neighborhood, not against it. The entire program (below) was presented to the neighborhood. Please plan to attend as many as you can.
